Tanca Group · 2018 — 2026
The story of a Vietnamese software company that went from a phone-based time-tracking app to an AI-powered talent management ecosystem — and the decisions that made it happen.

Tanca's founder, Tran Viet Quan, graduated from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City.
Before Tanca, he had failed three times: a fresh-flower shop funded by a bank loan, a software outsourcing workshop that didn't satisfy his creative drive, and nongnghiepangiang.vn — a real-time agricultural price platform welcomed by both authorities and farmers, yet no one would pay for the data.
Tanca was his fourth venture. And it was during the site visits he made for that failed project that he kept hearing the same question: how do you track attendance for field sales staff?
"I'm not afraid to go after a niche market."
— Tran Viet Quan, Founder & CEO, Tanca Group
Five decisions that shaped Tanca
2018 – 2019
Back then, the market only had fingerprint time clocks. Tanca chose the road no one else was taking: time tracking via smartphone, combining GPS with AI facial recognition. This was the first HR software in Vietnam to do it. The reason was simple: retail chains, construction firms, real estate companies — businesses whose employees are scattered across stores, job sites, and the streets — could never be managed by a single machine bolted to an office door.

2019 – 2020
While a wave of Vietnamese tech startups raced to raise capital, Tanca chose to sustain itself on revenue from day one. The lesson came from an earlier failure: a product people love but that generates no cash flow isn't a business. The principle: learn from models that have already succeeded worldwide, execute fast, and integrate multiple technologies instead of building everything from scratch.
2020 – 2021
COVID-19 was a brutal stress test. Tanca's customer base grew 20% amid the work-from-home wave, yet monthly revenue fell. Many customers asked to defer payments. Tanca decided to let a large number of them keep using the platform for free. Not out of generosity — because SMEs remember who stood by them when times were hard.

2021 – 2023
When big corporations started building AI time-tracking cameras, Tanca wasn't worried. AI cameras are just a tiny piece of the HR management puzzle — and large corporations rarely have the patience for a niche market. During this period, Tanca partnered with HANET to launch an AI camera integrated with its platform, expanding into Taiwan, China, the US, Indonesia, and the Philippines under an 80% Vietnam / 20% international strategy.

2024 – 2026
In 2024, with the product running smoothly and profitably, Tanca did the most puzzling thing imaginable: it restructured its entire platform around an AI-native architecture. Not bolting on a chatbot. Not slapping on an "AI-powered" label. It meant rewriting the data layer so AI could read, understand, and predict across the entire talent lifecycle. In 2026, Tanca became Tanca Group.

Eight years, six awards, one mention by Gartner.
But the real measure is the 5,000 businesses that keep paying, year after year.
Not PR pieces. Interviews captured at different points of a journey.
The first article to profile Tanca: the first HR software in Vietnam to track attendance by phone using GPS combined with AI facial recognition.
As Vietnamese startups fell one after another, GenK told the story of a company just over two years old, with no investment fund, that weathered the pandemic on lessons learned from three earlier failures.
HANET's AI camera integrates directly with Tanca.io, turning attendance tracking into combined hardware-and-software infrastructure.
2,200+ businesses, nearly 180,000 employees using it every day, more than 2 million digitized records — and still without a single funding round.
The most candid interview yet about our business philosophy: choosing a small slice of the pie, growing 200–300% a year, and earning a place alongside Shopee, Vinamilk, and Loc Troi.
Tran Viet Quan
Founder & CEO · Tanca GroupWe once built an agricultural pricing platform that both authorities and farmers welcomed. No one paid for it. The lesson: if users won't open their wallets, you're running a charity — not a startup.
AI camera is just a small piece of HR management. Big corporations look at the cash flow and pass. We looked eight years ahead and dug in.
In just 1.5 years we built 13 services serving 10 industries — not because we're brilliant, but because we were willing to learn from models that already succeeded worldwide and integrate them instead of building everything ourselves.
During COVID, we let many customers use our product for free while our revenue dropped. Those businesses are still with us today.
In 2024, our software was running well. We rewrote it into an AI-native architecture anyway. Because what makes you win today is what will kill you tomorrow.
Applying AI to Talent Management in the enterprise
We started with a simple problem: employees clocking in wrong, payroll calculated wrong, businesses losing money.
But once we solved that problem, we recognized a bigger truth: Southeast Asian businesses don't just need HR management — they need talent management. Hire the right people. Train the right skills. Retain the right talent.
And AI is the key to doing that at scale. That's why Tanca Group was born.
"Empowering every organization in Southeast Asia to unlock, grow, and retain talent through AI."
