Choosing Between OKR, KPI and BSC for Your Company

Tanca has three places to manage objectives, side by side in the Talent module. They do not replace one another. This article helps you choose the right one before you put effort into setting it up.

Three tools, three different problems

Talent › OKR & Performance — cycle overview dashboard
Talent › OKR & Performance — cycle overview dashboard
ToolAnswers the questionBest suited for
OKR & PerformanceWhere do we want to get to this quarter?Directional, ambitious objectives that need to be linked company → department → individual
KPI & MBOWhat figure is each person committing to achieve?Individual targets per cycle, with an approver and pass thresholds
KPI SheetHow many points did each person get this month?Periodic spreadsheet-based scoring, many employees, many scorers

Three questions for a quick choice

  1. Do you need to link objectives across levels (child objectives connected to parent objectives)? → OKR. Only OKR has an objective tree and an Alignment Map.
  2. Do you need monthly scoring for an entire store / department on a single sheet? → KPI Sheet. This is the most stable tool currently available for high-volume scoring.
  3. Do you need a separate approver for each KPI and template-based review cycles? → KPI & MBO. See the warning about its current status in article B11-06.

Where BSC lives

Talent › KPI & MBO › Create new — three review types
Talent › KPI & MBO › Create new — three review types

BSC (Balanced Scorecard) is not a separate module. It appears in two places:

  • KPI & MBO › Create new › BSC KPI — a review cycle attached to a BSC template: Financial, Customer, Internal Process, Learning and Growth. Each cycle chooses one perspective, so a complete BSC set requires four parallel cycles.
  • OKR › Add objective › BSC level — a field numbered 1 to 5 for tiering objectives. Note: this is a level (rank), not the four BSC perspectives above. Don't confuse these two fields.

Practical rollout suggestions

For most Vietnamese companies just getting started, combining two layers is enough: OKR for the company and department levels to keep direction, and KPI Sheet for the employee level to produce the scores used for pay and bonuses. Skip KPI & MBO until you truly need a per-KPI approval flow.

The three tools currently do not share data with one another. A target declared in KPI Sheet does not automatically flow into an OKR KR, and vice versa. Choose one place as the source of truth for each figure, to avoid entering it twice and having the numbers diverge.
